Long ascents and sustained elevation gain place very different demands on the body from a regular mountain hike. They require endurance, controlled pacing, efficient movement and the ability to manage effort over an extended period. The Vertical Challenge is designed to give Thin Air Club members practical experience with sustained climbing and significant elevation gain, helping them develop the physical and mental foundations needed for more demanding mountain objectives.
Under the guidance of our mountain leader and coach Faisi Shalmani, members will work on managing their pace on steep terrain, maintaining a sustainable effort, adapting their movement to the gradient and recognising how their bodies respond as the climb progresses. The challenge is not simply about reaching the top as quickly as possible. It is about learning to distribute effort, make sensible pacing decisions and keep moving effectively when the ascent becomes demanding. Members will approach the challenge from different starting points, and the experience will help them better understand their current capabilities, identify areas for improvement and apply those lessons to future training.
The ability to sustain effort on long ascents is an important foundation for high-altitude mountaineering, where managing energy over time can be just as important as physical strength.
Earn your elevation. Learn to manage the climb. Build endurance for bigger objectives.
This hike is exclusively for active Thin Air Club members.
The assessment is suitable for members with different levels of hiking experience and fitness. You do not need to be an elite hiker or an experienced mountaineer to take part.
What matters is your commitment to developing your mountain skills and working towards your high-altitude goals.
